Q & A
What does a typical day in Spanish class look like?
Class will generally consist of some kind of warm- up activity. The rest of the class period may vary widely in order to focus on each of the core language concepts: speaking, listening, reading, writing, and culture. Lots of activities and games will be utilized for variety.
What is teaching methods are used?
I try to emphasize speaking, but otherwise take a fairly traditional approach towards language learning as many entrance exams are still grammar based. I do use some CI and TPRS. TPRS is a methodology that is based on learning language through listening to and reading stories. CI stands for Comprehensible Input and it is a method that focuses on attaining language by using the language in comprehensible ways, which encompasses TPRS, but also may look like talking about the weather, learning about a country or person in Spanish, just to name a few examples.

Studying a language is different than studying other subjects because it isn't just vocabulary and straight forward facts. Studying flashcards can help, however active studying methods are going to prove the most useful. That may be doing exercises from a workbook or trying to practice specific conversations related to the topic at hand.
